Less Money, More Problems-Spokane Cancels Concert

SPOKANE, WA (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) -- The Spokane Symphony has cancelled its annual Labor Day concert due to financial woes. Over the past 25 years, more than 5,000 fans have attended the free Labor Day concert. While past years’ concerts have been funded by numerous corporate sponsorships, this year, the sponsorships have dwindled down to one according to The Spokesman Review.

The symphony board hopes to restore the Labor Day concert in 2011.In addition to the suspension of the Labor Day concert, the symphony also has postponed until the 2011-2012 season a pop concert featuring Frank Sinatra Jr. That concert had been set for Oct. 4 and was one of six concerts in the symphony’s pop concert lineup. The symphony board and staff are developing a long-range vision and multi-year budget to deal with the money problems and have reduced staff this year to offset the effects of a poor economy. Brenda Nienhouse, executive director of the symphony says that the cuts being made in Spokane are consistent with what’s occurring with arts organizations elsewhere in the country during the current economy, according to The Spokesman Review. --by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers |
