King Kong Notches Up Huge Opening Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) -- Warner Bros. King Kong reboot "Kong:Skull Island" was the king of the movie jungle over the weekend, opening to an estimated $142.6M on 20,400 screens in 65 international territories.

The action film, Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Samuel L Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Brie Larson, the film was also number 1 for the weekend domestically, earning an estimated $61 million in North American theaters.

20th Century Fox's super hero action adventure Logan held on to the #2 slot for over the weekend, adding an estimated $107.8M worldwide for an eye-popping cumulative take of $437,656,733.

The controversial film "A Dog's Purpose" held on to the #3 spot adding an estimated $23 million for a worldwide cume of $140,455,575. Early criticsm from animal rights groups about the treatment of dogs used in filming the pic appeared to do little to dampen the enthusiasm of the audience.
