Reading Civic Center Posts Worst Operating Loss
Posted: October 26, 2009
READING, PA (AP) - The past season was the toughest for the arena and theater of Reading's downtown civic center.

The center announced it ended its fiscal year on June 30 with a worst-ever operating loss of $234,899.

General manager Zane Collings said people worried about their jobs and the faltering economy bought fewer tickets for events at the Sovereign Center and the Sovereign Performing Arts Center.

He said people who did buy tickets purchased less food and other items from concession stands.

Collings said five full-time jobs, or nearly a quarter of the work force, have been cut and pay raises have been suspended.

The Berks County Convention Center Authority said it will cover the losses from reserves.
