Arena Anhembi
48 Injured In Arena Collapse
Posted: August 22, 2011
SÃO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Nearly 50 people have been injured as temporary bleachers filled with some 3,000 people collapsed during a pop concert in Brazil.

Organizers say the bleachers fell apart as fans at a VIP section jumped nonstop during a show by pop singer Ivete Sangalo at the Arena Anhembi in South America's largest city.

Organizers say four of the 48 people injured were taken to a hospital, with possible fractures. Nearly 25,000 were at the show.

The organizers said in a statement Sunday that the collapse likely occured because fans gathered at one side of the balcony all at the same time.

Sangalo is one of Brazil's most popular singers. Last month she was picked to represent the country in the festivities of FIFA's World Cup qualifying draw in Rio de Janeiro.
