LOS ANGELES (AP) óLos Angeles officials have denied a permit to a 30-year-old street festival days before its scheduled weekend opening because organizers couldn't come up with cash.
The Los Angeles Board of Public Works on Wednesday refused to sanction the Sunset Junction event, which has been held annually in the Silver Lake area.
Officials say festival organizers owe the city about $256,000 to cover police, fire and other costs of last year's event.
The city estimated costs of this year's festival at more than $140,000 and demanded that organizers cut them a check for the amount.
When they didn't, the special event permit was denied.
