Disney To Launch Its Own Streaming Video Services
Posted: August 9, 2017
(CelebrityAccess) -- Disney said it planning to pull all of its content from Netflix and launch a branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019.

The company revealed its plans for the streaming service in its latest earnings release on Tuesday.

According to CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company had a "good relationship" with Netflix, but was planning to make their in-house streaming service the source for most their content starting in 2019.

Content affected by the deal include films from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel, while Marvel's TV shows will remain on the Netflix platform. Disney will also launch a separate video streaming service for ESPN-branded content. The platform will feature about 10,000 sporting events each year and carry content from the Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer, as well as college sports and Grand Slam tennis.

"This represents a big strategic shift for the company," Iger told CNBC. "We felt that having control of a platform we've been very impressed with after buying 33 percent of it a year ago would give us control of our destiny."

It remains to be seen how many streaming services customers will be willing to be subscribed to.
