Toyota Shed Roof Insurance Options Weighed
Posted: April 26, 2007
MOOSIC, PA (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) -- As construction continues on repairing the roof of the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain, which collapsed under heavy snowstorms on Valentine’s Day of this year, Lackawanna County is weighing all options for possible insurance plans to cover the structure.

Commissioner Chariman Robert C. Cordaro told the Times-Tribune that the county’s insurance carrier has said it’s willing to insure the new canvas roof, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the county will take out a policy.

“Right now, we have a commitment to a policy, not a confirmation of a price,” Cordaro told the paper. “If we get a reasonable policy without monstrous premiums, we’ll buy insurance.”

The previous tent-like roof was not insured, although “hard structures,” like like the stage scaffolding and supports, were covered.

Scranton-based Housing and Redevelopment Insurance Exchange, the county’s general liability insurance carrier, covers the amphitheater and will monitor construction of the new roof to develop a coverage cost. Cordaro told the paper that he did not know why the tent wasn’t originally covered – whether the former insurance carrier wouldn’t take the risk or the previous administration wouldn’t pay the cost – a judgment that his administration will soon have to make.

Maximum cost of the new British-made canvas roof will be $1.2 million, according to The Times-Tribune. Crews are currently finishing deconstruction of the old canvas structure and safety testing of support poles.

The project is expected to be completed in time for the season’s first concert with Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace and Puddle of Mudd on June 2. --by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
