The Memorial Auditorium
Old Arena's Salvaged Equipment To Cool Buffalo Theater
Posted: July 12, 2007
BUFFALO, NY (AP) -- A landmark Buffalo theater is getting a cool gift, courtesy of an old arena that's facing the wrecking ball.

Air-conditioning equipment from the mothballed Memorial Auditorium is being moved a few blocks to Shea's Performing Arts Center.

Crews will move ten large ice tanks from the city-owned Aud to the city-owned theater, an 80-year-old venue with an inadequate cooling system. The 12-foot-tall tanks hold an icy slush that maintained chilly conditions at ice level when the Aud was the home of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.

The air-conditioning equipment was just three years old when the Aud was replaced by the HSBC Arena in 1996. The 67-year-old Aud is slated to be torn down as part of Buffalo's waterfront redevelopment project.

Officials at Shea's tell The Buffalo News that the salvaged equipment will save the theater as much as $100,000.
