About 200,000 Attend Essence Festival
Posted: July 9, 2007
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- An estimated 200,000 people attended the Essence Music Festival, which returned to New Orleans for the first time since Hurricane Katrina, festival officials said Sunday.

"Our homecoming celebration to New Orleans was tremendously successful," said Michelle Eubanks, president of Essence Communications Inc., which put on the three-day event that ended Saturday. "The spirit and energy in the city during the festival reminded us all why New Orleans is the natural home for the Essence Music Festival."

The festival had been held in New Orleans over the Fourth of July weekend since its launch in 1995. Last year it was moved to Houston because of Katrina.

In 2005, a record-breaking 232,000 people attended the festival in New Orleans, according to the event's organizers.
