Spinal Tap Rocks London's Live Earth Concert With Bass Guitar Army
Posted: July 9, 2007
LONDON (AP) -- You've heard of a guitar army. How about a "bass" guitar army?

It happened at the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London. With Spinal Tap, Harry Shearer, as Derek Smalls, brought out bass players for most of the other bands who were performing at Wembley for Live Earth.

They all took the stage and played "Big Bottom" with Spinal Tap. A few songs before that, Ricky Gervais introduced Marty DiBergi. That's Rob Reiner in character from "This is Spinal Tap!."

Reiner told the crowd he was introducing "a rock band that has two great qualities: volume and punctuality."

Shearer, by the way, made a crack that could have a couple of meanings. While introducing each of those bass players and saying which band they're in, it was one player per band. But, Madonna had four so he said "eventually everyone does Madonna."
